The level challenges in Trials Fusion, on the other hand, have been crafted to honour each track and highlight new ways to experience it.Įven the more mundane challenges, like completing a level without crashing while also performing a certain number of flips or without leaning your rider, offer a refreshing new perspective on how to approach each track that builds on the skills and tricks players learned to shave seconds from their time.īut the third challenge for each level is typically something a bit more out there - like navigating jagged hills while driving under a speed limit, finding hidden platforms containing portals to secret areas or winning an impromptu tennis match against a giant penguin. It turned the levels into chores where you just go through the motions to complete a track for the item at the end rather than for the joy of experiencing the track again.

The steady level progression makes Trials Fusion more accessible early on, and may lull some players into a false sense of security that the difficulty has been toned down from past games.īut those illusions vanish once you hit the harder-difficulty events, with some of the most devious and expletive-inducing tracks in the series to date.Įach level also has its own set of three challenges, which fare much better than the botched introduction of missions in Trials Frontier, with objectives that mostly revolved around collecting items in a post-race lottery. The level editor in Trials Fusion builds on what RedLynx accomplished with Trials Evolution, giving players the tools they need to create everything from their own motocross obstacle courses to a first-person dungeon maze or the inevitable Flappy Bird clone.Īnd while stunts can be performed at any time in Trials Fusion, they mostly only come into play during the new FMX levels, where medals are earned based on your stunt score instead of completion time or ability to avoid wipe-outs.Įarning enough medals allows you to advance to the next set of events, typically accompanied by a tutorial introducing some new skill that will prove invaluable on the newly unlocked tracks. Stunts are controlled with the right analogue stick, with both the stick's direction and the bike's position determining which slick move you pull off.įor the most part, the stunts work well, though there are the few occasional quirks where adding flips and spins to a trick will confuse the game into shifting your rider into a different trick, which can cause a crash if the change in position throws off your landing timing. New to the series in Trials Fusion is a physics-based trick system and a handful of FMX stunt levels to take advantage of the feature.

It's a game of trial and error, yes, but each fault acts as a learning experience for the next attempt, practising until you have built up the focus and skill to earn enough medals to advance to the next set of events. Players progress through a series of increasingly difficult tracks, using the lean of their rider to keep their bike balanced while leaping over jumps and skidding over rough terrain in a race against the clock. The core Trials experience remains unchanged in Trials Fusion. Having already reinvented the wheel in the studio's last outing, RedLynx opted this time to build on their base, incorporating new elements like a stunt system and even some light narrative into a new gauntlet of dirt bike obstacle courses. Trials Fusion is the latest in RedLynx's physics-heavy series of motocross masochism, following on from the success of 2012's acclaimed Trials Evolution.
